I first found out about Bishop Arts District several years ago when my husband took me to what is now one of our favorite restaurants, Dallas Grilled Cheese Co. for my birthday. We instantly fell in love with the restaurant and the vibe of this artsy area.

+ = ❤️ Mural
My all time favorite mural and by far the most well known in Bishop Arts. Perfect for you and your boo or you and your BFF. My husband and I are actually doing our one year wedding anniversary pictures in Bishop Arts and this mural is at the top of my list. + = ❤️ is facing W 7th St towards a tiny parking lot that is only for Ten Bells Tavern. If you don't want cars in your picture I highly suggest going in the morning or early afternoon during the week (like the bottom picture). If you go during the weekend you will want to get there in the morning before the brunch crowd.

Lee Harvey Oswald, the man believed to have assassinated JFK, lived in a "Dallas rooming house" in Oak Cliff down the street from Bishop Arts. The house is still intact and located at 1026 N. Beckley St, Oak Cliff if you want to check it out. I believe they do tours of the house if your into that kind of stuff. The mural is actually facing a tiny parking lot that is specifically for the Salty Donut and you can access it from W 7th St. Since it's facing a parking lot there is a possibility a car will be parked in front of this mural. Seems to be a hit or miss no specific time if a car will or won't be parked there.

Exploring Bishop Arts
In the heart of North Oak Cliff, this hip area is a historical shopping district that has some of the best dining, boutiques, art galleries, and public art in Dallas. Since discovering Bishop Arts District I have eaten some of the yummiest food in Dallas, found some unique gifts, and taken one too many pictures in front of murals.
Almost every building in Bishop Arts has at least one restaurant or dessert shop in it. There are so many places to eat within this tiny area of Oak Cliff. What's even crazier is that every restaurant is packed no matter the day of the week. With that being said, I highly recommend researching to see if the restaurant you're thinking of eating at does reservations.
Restaurants
For breakfast, check out Jonathan's Oak Cliff, its so good they have two locations! They're only open until 2:30. The Salty Donut is a great gourmet donut place if you're wanting something sweet vs savory for breakfast. They are open until 6pm so no rush to get there. There's also Southern Maid Donuts near the Kessler Theater. They offer more than just donuts like shakes, breakfast tacos, etc. Like I said above, one of our absolute favorite places to eat is at Dallas Grilled Cheese Co. No matter what you get there you will not be disappointed! If you're a ranch obsessed person like me, get the ranch dressing. Seriously the best ranch I have ever had! Pro tip: ask the waiter(ess) for a pint of it to-go, you won't regret it! If you're craving pizza hit up Eno's Pizza Tavern. I highly recommend getting the truffle cheese bread, it is saviory greatness! Their thin crust pizzas are delightful and crispy. Hunky's is hands down one of the best traditional diners in Dallas. It has all the traditional diner food: hamburgers, Frito pie, hot dogs, and chicken sandwiches. If you're looking for great Tex-Mex stop by Tejas, their queso taste like a fancier version of Fuzzy's and their homemade chips are to die for! If you're craving meat and lots of it head over to Lockhart Smokehouse BBQ. They are a Texas institution from Lockhart, TX (southeast of Austin). They are a traditional TX BBQ smokehouse so, once they're out of a certain product they don't restock it until the next day. Marsico La Reyna is a great Mexican seafood restaurant by the Kessler with amazing reviews.
Dessert
Being a major dessert lover, I have a tried quite a few of the dessert spots in the area. Emporium Pies is one of the best pie places in DFW. Try their seasonal flavors, they don't disappoint. Hunky's has pies & cakes (that change daily), brownies, shakes & malts, and of course banana splits. Their cakes are absolutely divine! Trailercakes is a scrumptious cupcakery that serves, you guessed it, decant cupcakes. They also have an airstream, Bubbles, that you can rent for parties. Unfortunately a car ran into their store front so you have to call and place an order. Picolé is a delicious spot if you're craving something refreshing and sweet. They have different popsicles flavors ranging from sweet to fruity to alcohol infused. Azucar Ice Cream Company is a great spot for something cool and sweet after a delicious dinner. They're a Cuban inspired ice cream shop based in Miami. If you're closer to the Kessler Theater make sure to check out Marches Bakery... apparently everything is to die for!
Shopping
Similar to the food, there is no short supply for shopping in Bishop Arts. Some of my favorites include: Bishop Street Market which has corky cards for every occasion, great unique gifts, and clothing. I always stop in Fête-ish every time I'm in Bishop Arts. Each room is a different city/state theme. In those rooms they have candles, trinkets, gifts, clothes from that area. Urban Owl Gift Shop has a variety of home goods, cards, stickers, jewelry, and items that are perfect if you're looking for gifts. Mosaics Makers Collective sells a variety of clothing, jewelry, and trinkets from local artists around Dallas/Ft. Worth. AJ Vagabonds has unique outdoor apparel with Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Oak Cliff specific art, clothing, patches, stickers, etc. We Are 1976 is a live print shop where you can watch print making happen in front of your eyes! If you're an art nut like me, it's heaven! They also sell unique one of a kind cards, t-shirts, stationary, books, and collectibles. The Laughing Willow has fantastic clothing for adults and kids! I'm definitely guilty of spending too much money there! If you're heading towards the Kessler Theater make sure to check Davis Street Mercantile which is an eclectic store selling a variety of goods and gifts. Austin Moon Gifts + Home Goods and Beatnik Fine Goods both sell clothes, gifts, and home good items.
As usual, for specific locations and directions of the following: parking, art, restaurants or shops mentioned please visit the map at the bottom of the blog post.
When & Where?
The best day/time to go Bishop Arts is during the week and early in the day. There is way more parking available and not to mention less cars to possibly be parked in front of any murals you want to take a picture with. If you can't go during the week the weekend is fine but expect a lot more traffic in the area and less parking options. I would definitely stick to going during the day time and only staying as late as the shops/restaurants are open. Don't forget, it may not feel like Oak Cliff but it is and could become sketchy real fast at night. I suggest if you're going to the area super late go with a buddy.
Address
403 N Bishop Ave, Dallas, TX 75208.
Transportation
There is a DART street car that goes around the Oak Cliff area with a stop by Bishop Arts District. The stop is conveniently called "Bishop Arts Station" and is located off N Zang Blvd and in between W Davis St and W 7th St. It is surrounded by a CVS, 7-Elven, The Local Oak restaurant, and The Victor Prosper apartments that has shops on the bottom level.
In order to get to the heart of Bishop Arts from the street car you have to walk up a little hill on either W Davis St or W 7th St to get to N Bishop Ave.
There are several DART bus stops in Bishop Arts. One bus stop is outside of Picolé popsicles at the intersection of Haines Ave and W Davis St.

Parking
If you want to drive to Bishop Arts District you can find parking but it can be difficult on a weekend if you aren't willing to pay for valet. There are a few public parking lots, 1 pay lot, 2 areas for Valet, and street parking in Bishop Arts.
Lots
1. The lot I prefer is by Dallas Grilled Cheese Co, Pho 88, and Oddfellows. During the week you can easily find parking here but on the weekend or if there's an event, half the lot is taken up by valet. Valet takes credit/debit cards and cash. The lot fills up very quickly since its small even without the valet taking up half the lot.
2. A small parking lot is located off the alleyway behind Dallas Grilled Cheese Co and Coco's Fire & Ice. You can get to off of N Bishop Ave by Coco's Fire & Ice entrance or from N Madison behind M'Antiques.
3. Located off Melba in between N Bishop Ave and N Madison Ave in between the Botanist and Bishop Flat apartments. This parking lot is very small so it does fill up quickly.
4. Located on W 9th St in between N Bishop Ave and N Madison Ave surrounded by Tejas, Bishop Highline Apartments, Treehaus Apartments, Angelique Apartments, Nomad Grills, and Artsey Art Studio.
a. Half the parking lot is free and the other half you have to pay for your spot by using the app: ParkMobile. The lot is divided by sculptures spaced close enough together that you cannot go through to the other side.
b. Obviously the free side fills up quickly but if you get there early in the day you should be able to find parking there. Once noon hits you'll only get a spot there if someone happens to be walking to their car. In order to get into the free side of the lot you must be on N Bishop Ave the entrance is small so it's hard to miss. It's right by the Angelique Apartments and across N Bishop Ave from the building that shares Nomad Grills and Artsey Art Studio.
c. For this side of the lot you use the pay app: ParkMobile. The entrance for this lot is located off W 9th St in between N Bishop Ave and N Madison Ave. It can sneak up on you if there are a lot of cars parallel parked on W 9th St.
5. Lot for the shopping center that has: Lockhart Smokehouse, Yaya Foot Spa, Bishop Cider, and D & J Nails. It is a very tiny lot so spaces do fill up very quickly. You can see this lot from N Bishop Ave but you can access it from W 7th St.
6. Located by the Salty Donut but it is only for customers who are going to the Salty Donut. It can be accessed from W 7th St and is in between N Adams Ave and N Bishop Ave. It has a gate so it looks like a private lot but its not.
Valet
The main valet stand thats always open is located off N Bishop Ave in front of Eno's Pizza Tavern. Depending on the time and day N Bishop Ave can be very congested so if you want to avoid that you'll want to go to the valet stand in the Dallas Grilled Cheese Co., Pho 88, and Oddfellows parking lot.
Street Parking
There is parallel and street parking through out Bishop Arts. Parallel parking off of N Bishop Ave is free but if you are parking on N Madison Ave there are some parking meters. The parking meters off N Madison Ave are by Bishop Highline Apartments and Treehaus Apartments. There is free street parking off W 10th St and N Bishop Ave.
