Deep Ellum is one of the most eclectic, historic, and famous parts of Dallas. It's rich with music and art history. Everywhere you turn you see murals: random murals, Dallas' iconic skyline murals, Dallas landmark murals, a whole alley way of murals dedicated to blues musicians, etc. I mean how cool is it that the Deep Ellum Arts Co commissioned artists to paint 42 murals around the area? And that's not all that's there - there is so much more! So much so, that I had to break the Deep Ellum blog post into 4️⃣ different posts! Yes, 4️⃣, so here's part 1️⃣! The murals in Deep Ellum hold a special place in my heart - my husband and I got our engagement pictures done in here! They even have several small businesses (and a few bigger ones), restaurants, dessert shops, 7 music venues, plus a bowling alley AND a place where you can do a little batting practice for baseball that has a bar inside. Anything you could want Deep Ellum has it: history ✅ art ✅ music ✅ food ✅ shopping ✅. You won't be bored when you ✅ this place out!
The Art
The murals here are EVERYTHING and are literally everywhere you turn! Each time I have gone down to Deep Ellum I spent 2+ hours taking pictures and get 3+ miles of walking in. It can be over stimulating but hey, I got you! Fair warning, for most of these murals you gotta get there early or go during a week day or you'll get a ton of murals with cars parked in front.
Like I said before - there is art literally everywhere you look and turn. So I'll tackle all the murals by taking it street by street starting from N Good Latimer Expy. The first set of Murals are located on St Louis, St Taylor St, Canton St, Trunk Ave, and Clover St. There are not as many murals located on these streets since they are on the outskirts of Deep Ellum. Again, I'll start at Good Latimer Expy and move down St Louis, Taylor, Canton, then Clover Streets.
St Louis St
Crowdus St turns into St Louis St and dead ends into S Malcolm X Blvd. The first set of Murals are located on Deep Ellum Brewing Company's Brewery and Distillery.
Deep Ellum Brewing Company Mural
Showing off the iconic Deep Ellum Brewing lettering and their fun logo of a face with a bottle of beer for the mouth. Goal is to go back and get a better photo with the trash can lids down and of course, the tree not blocking the word Ellum. There is also some graffiti style artwork on the roof that you can see easily from the street. This mural faces St Louis St and is on the side of the building that houses their warehouse.
Artist(s): Leighton Autrey was once a MLB prospect but now does art and murals full time. He was one of the original artists to work on the 42 Murals Project in Deep Ellum. He has an impressive resume; including being one of four American artists to have his artwork showcased in the weeks leading up to the 2012 Olympics in London. (website: Leighton Autry instagram: @leightonautry)
Birds Mural
Up next is the Bird Mural facing St Louis St, the mural is on the entrance for Deep Ellum Brewing's Taproom.
Artist(s) Unknown.
Love Runs Deep Mural
This awesome mural shows a line of suspects one including the man with the Deep Ellum Brewing logo for a head. Deep Ellum Brewing Company's slogan or motto is Love Runs Deep - just check out their website they incorporate everywhere! Love Runs Deep faces S Malcolm X Blvd at the intersection of St Louis St.
Artist: Michael McPheeters aka MR.MURAL grew up in Los Angeles he began his career as a street artist and scenic painter in the film industry. He eventually made his way to Dallas where he has become a "multifaceted contemporary artist, activist and graffiti writer". (website: MichaelMcPheeters instagram: @michaelmchpheeters)
Taylor St
Next up we navigate Taylor St starting at Good Latimer Expy.
The Umbrella Man Mural
This mural doubling as a mural and sign, this is the building for Life In Deep Ellum which is a faith based community center. They also have a coffee shop, Moka Coffee and an art gallery, Umbrella Gallery that supports local artists. The mural faces the parking lot for the building and S Malcolm X Blvd.
Artist(s) Unknown.
The next set of murals are on the building for the Mavs (Mavericks) Gaming Hub. "It is the only of its kind – a modern warehouse with an emphasis on technology and E-sports. However, it is a blank canvas and can be transformed to bring any event vision to life." The building has art on each side of the building so I will focus on the building then go back to moving down Taylor St.
Artist(s): Tex Moton, Jerod "DTox" Davies, and Mez Data. Tex Moton co-founded the graffiti group called Infinite Crew in 1996. Since then the group has set a high standard for street art in Dallas and has artwork scattered throughout the city. Moton painted the words in this mural. (website: Muralogy instagram: @texmoton) Artist(s): Jerod "DTox" Davies comes from a long line of artists. "His passionate approach at creating art is fueled by a deeply-rooted attraction for unconventional beauty. Heavily influenced by texture, his style is virtually impossible to categorize yet easy to describe, bold portraits, believable and surreal, direct yet ornate with a vibrant sarcasm." (website: thejerod instagram: @dtoxart) Mez Data aka Blake Bermel is an Austin based artist who has a ton of graffiti around that area. He is also the owner and creator of The Royal Make Marker which is a graffiti mural company. (website: Mez Data instagram: @mezdata)
Mavs Gaming Hub Mural
The first mural on the Mavs Gaming Hub building that you'll see heading down Taylor St facing the Umbrella Man above. This mural includes Dirk Nowitzki and the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy, which the Mavericks won in 2011 thanks to Dirk!
NBA 2K22 Mural
Luka Doncic who started his basketball career in Madrid was originally drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 2018 and immediately traded to the Mavericks. Safe to say Dallas made the right move when getting Luka! Luka faces Taylor St at the intersection of Taylor St and S Malcolm X Blvd.
Mavs + Dr Pepper Mural
These pieces are on the back of the building facing Virgil St and the parking lot for Indie Deep Ellum Apartments. What's better than the Mavericks and Dr. Pepper??
Now back to moving down Taylor St.
Dirk Mural
If you don't know who this is - let me introduce you, this is Dirk Nowitzki who was depicted in the Mavs Gaming Hub with the trophy. Dirk started playing in Germany at the age of 16 in 1994 and was drafted in the NBA to the Milwaukee Bucks in 1998 and was immediately traded to the Mavs. Dirk is the main reason the Mavericks won the 2011 championship. Luka and Dirk have a lot of similarities: starting professionally over in Europe at a very young age, drafted in the NBA at the age of 19/20, and then immediately traded to Dallas. Across from the parking lot from the Mavs Gaming Hub on Taylor St located on the back of building that houses SupportNinja is where you can find the Mavs legend.
Artist(s): Josh Mittag, not much on Josh but he has several pieces sprinkled through out Dallas. (website: Josh Mittag instagram: @mittagjosh)
Cost Plus Drugs Mural
This mural is facing Taylor St and S Walton St and is impressively large! Showing off some of the Dallas iconic pieces - The Pegasus and The Traveling Man while incorporating Doctors, Nurses, and science! This building is the manufacturing warehouse of Mark Cuban's low cost medical drug company. The reason the drugs are cheaper is because they cut out the middle man. Great concept and much needed in today's world!
Artist(s): Michael McPheeters aka MR.MURAL (website: MichaelMcPheeters instagram: @michaelmchpheeters)
Flowers Mural
If you head towards Virgil St from the Cost Plus Mural on S Walton St you'll find this floral piece. The real landscaping could use some work in order to show off this mural better!
Artist(s): Frank Campagna well known muralist and Dallas native. He currently owns Kettle Art Gallery off Main St in Deep Ellum. (website: Frank Campagna)
Canton St
Second to last we start our adventure on Canton St starting at Good Latimer Expy.
Manic Mural
First up at the intersection of Canton and Crowdus St is this lovely lady! She is on the side of Manic Bar and faces Crowdus St. Manic Bar specializes in sports watching parties and has artwork everywhere inside!
Artist(s) Unknown.
Indie Deep Ellum Parking Garage Mural
This piece is located at the entrance of the Indie Deep Ellum apartment complex parking garage. It incorporates all icons of Deep Ellum including: the Deep Ellum neon sign, the Gypsy Tea Room neon sign, Lead Belly, and Erykah Badu. In order to get to this vibrant mural you will need to make your way to S Virgil St. Best way to get there from Good Latimer is to turn right on S Malcolm X Blvd and turn right on S Virgil.
Artist(s): Ryan Stalsby graduated from the Art Institute of Dallas in 2006 and originally worked for a graphic design company before branching out to create paintings and murals. (website: Ryan Stalsby)
Say Anything Mural
If you turn left out of the parking lot and turn left on S Walton St or if you continue to head down Canton St from Good Latimer Expy, you will find these iconic characters making out. Love this take on the movie, Say Anything, by mixing it with the Simpsons and Bob's Burgers. This mural is at the intersection of S Walton St and Canton St, facing S Walton.
Artist(s): The House of Pannek is an artistic duo consisting of Adrienne and Preston Pannek. They have several pieces scattered through out Deep Ellum and Dallas. (website: House of Pannek instagram: @thehouseofpannek)
Bronco Mural
This pony is located on a garage door on the building next to Bart and Louise - it's hard to miss considering its bright yellow! Just take a few steps towards Virgil St on S Walton St.
Artist(s) Unknown.
Bright Eyes Mural
Across the Canton St from the Say Anything Mural at the other side of the intersection of Canton St and S Walton St are these bright eyes! These eyes are facing Canton st.
Artist(s): I couldn't find anything on the three people created the framed paintings but the black and white piece piece of the mural was done by Jerod "DTox" Davies comes from a long line of artists. "His passionate approach at creating art is fueled by a deeply-rooted attraction for unconventional beauty. Heavily influenced by texture, his style is virtually impossible to categorize yet easy to describe, bold portraits, believable and surreal, direct yet ornate with a vibrant sarcasm." (website: thejerod instagram: @dtoxart)
Prada Mural
This tiny Prada "store" is located in Marfa, Texas which is a small desert town in west Texas. This is not an actual store but rather an art installation that has actual Prada bags inside but you are not allowed to go inside... Now why would this little Prada store be there? Well, Marfa is a VERY eclectic town and VERY small but is known for its art and galleries. It was on my bucket list to go there - and luckily I was able to talk a few friends into going with me for my 30th birthday! If you ever visit the area don't blink because you drive through it! This mural is on the side of Barrington Gifts which is a leather goods store and is facing their parking lot. Which is at the intersection of Canton St and Murray St.
Artist(s): Malcolm Byers all I could find is that Malcolm has murals located all throughout Texas. (instagram: @malcolm_byers)
Portrait Mural
There is a mural located next to the Prada mural but it is hidden by the fence. So so so wish I could have gotten a better shot!
Artist(s) Unknown.
Bettatude Mural
These Beta Fish have humans growing out of them! So cool! These fish face Murray St as you head towards Clover St from Canton St.
Artist(s): Dan Colcer is a Transylvanian Artist who moved to the US in 2006 and to Dallas in 2008. He has several murals and pieces through out Dallas.(website: Dan Colcer instagram: @dcolcerart)
Trunk Ave
As you keep heading down Canton St you'll see a set of murals that are painted on a set of brick fences. Trunk Ave runs between Canton St and Commerce St. Unfortunately they are a doing quit a bit of construction around Deep Ellum. So they are using this street to store their construction supplies. Safe to say I'll have to go back when it's cleaned up and retake these pictures.
Minus Won Mural
First or last (depending on which way you start) of murals on Trunk Ave is one that is paying tribute to one of Dallas' Graffiti Artists, Alvaro Minus Won Angeles who passed away 2011. This mural is the closest to Canton St on Trunk Ave.
Artist(s): Jose May is a Dallas based Graffiti Artist who has murals sprinkled throughout Deep Ellum! Jose also does breaking dancing in his spare time! (website: Jose May instagram: @Joeskilz52)
Dia De Los Muertos Protest Mural

Artist(s): Shahla not only does murals but also creates fine art, branding, and illustration. (website: Shahla Yma instagram: @shahlayma)
Speak No, See No, Hear No Mural
Obviously a spin on the Three Wise Monkeys which is a Japanese pictorial maxim. According to the artist, "The concept of “hear no evil, see no evil, and speak no evil’ was used here to talk about the double standard in America around judging the good intentions and humanity of black people, and youth in particular".
Artist(s): Illy is a Sudanese-American artist who is currently based between Los Angeles and Dallas. She draws her inspiration from her culturally background growing in the Southern US and Sudanese culture. (instagram: @illytheartist)
Bobby Sessions Mural
Next up is the mural of Bobby Sessions who is a Grammy award winning artist. Bobby was born and raised Dallas, Texas. Bobby started rapping with the group, The Brain Gang in Deep Ellum so of course it makes sense to have a mural of him here! After taking a chance and quitting his job he went to pursue a career in music. Well it paid off, he has made quite a name for himself considering he has a Grammy and has written songs for Meghan Thee Stallion and Beyonce along with songs in movies like Coming 2 America.
Artist(s): James Moore not only does impressive murals but studied to be a tattoo artist. When he isn't doing murals he's busy tattooing people by appointment only.(website: JDMoore Portfolios instagram: @jdmooreportfolios)

To me this mural is about growth and that beauty that comes from it. Although, I'm sure it has a deeper meaning but hey, art is all about how it makes you feel, right?
Artist(s): Armando Aguirre, if you spend anytime exploring Oak Cliff you will see his artwork everywhere. He grew up in Oak Cliff and now gets to cover the city with his artwork. How cool is that? His interests include; "Mexican Muralist, Chicano Culture, Graffiti colors, and Aztec Mythology." (website: Armando Aguirre instagram: @arte.mando)
Take the Bull by the Horns Mural
Love that the artist incorporated the street polls to not disrupt the mural by painting clouds on them! The contrasting colors in the clouds against the cool colors makes everything pop!
Artist(s): Alec DeJesus currently lives in Dallas and has murals scattered around the US. He is mainly self-taught in painting and according to his website he shifted to murals during the shut down due to Covid in 2020. (website: Alec De Jesus instagram: @youcancallmealec)
Transformation Mural
Again, love how the artist incorporated the street poll to keep the flow of the mural going. This mural in my opinion is all about transformation. This woman looks like she is focusing on transforming into a bird to fly away.
Artist(s): Dee Najera is a Dallas artist who focuses on portraits, logos, digital designs, and murals. (instagram: @designs_by_Dee)
Soaring in the Deep Mural
This artist actually won this mural spot by entering a contest, where the artists had 3.5 hours to paint something that celebrated 150 years of Deep Ellum back in 2022. This mural won the popular vote and a great way to end (or begin depending on which street you started Trunk Ave with) Trunk Ave.
Artist(s): Dee Najera (instagram: @designs_by_Dee)

Artist(s): The House of Pannek (website: House of Pannek instagram: @thehouseofpannek)

Scrooge McDuck and Mr Monopoly spray painting?? I guess they'll do anything for money... They are the last of murals for this House of Pannek wall.
Betty Boop Mural
Next up is Betty Boop the beloved cartoon character with a great graffiti background. Of course, the graffiti has the Deep Ellum zip code of 75226, Pannek, $, Deep Ellum to name a few. What do you see?
The Son of American Gothic Mural
Love this take on The Son of Man and American Gothic! Obviously, instead of an apple and faces of the wife and the farmer its a spray paint can. Also, the unique symbols to create a pointillism style of art is just fantastic!
Clover St
Now for Clover St, which is more like an alleyway. Clover St is most famous for it's murals that take a deep dive in Deep Ellum Blues Music history. The majority of the street is covered with these murals and has been coined Blues Alley. Luckily for you that's covered in another post since there are so many murals. So the rest of the murals are covered here!
Mohler MMA Mural
Located on the back of Mohler MMA facing the Clover St alleyway. At the intersection of Clover St and S Malcolm X Blvd. Mohler is considered one of the oldest and most notable Jiu Jitsu gyms.

This fun and bright mural is located across Clover St from Mohler MMA and hard to miss due to the colors! These stripes face Clover St and Mohler MMA.
Chubster Mural
Chubster is spray painting his way through Deep Ellum and I think he wants ice cream, a donut, and a bone? Chubster can be found on the side of the building as you head down Clover St going back towards S Malcolm X Blvd.
Artist(s): Jose May (website: Jose May instagram: @Joeskilz52)
No Bounds Krew Mural
Located on the back of the Visit Dallas Mural facing the alleyway of Clover St. on the wall perpendicular to the Chubster mural is this brand spanking new mural. It was painted within the last month. Artist(s): No Bounds Krew is a group of graffiti artists that have been around since the 1990s hence the 30 years.

Very clever of the artist to make the back of the building look the front of a apartment building. Facing Clover St and located at the intersection of Clover St and S Walton St.
Artist: E Allen Warren is a freelance artist for the majority of his career and has recently started doing voice acting - pretty cool! At one point in time he owned E. When & Where?
Deep Ellum has always had a rougher vibe but has been trying to make a come back for several years now. The come back is going fairly strong especially now that COVID has taken a back seat. The area, especially on the weekends is packed and hard to find parking. If you go there early during the day or on Sunday mornings its fairly easy to find parking and walk around. If you decide to go early or stay late bring a buddy; this is still downtown Dallas and can give off a sketchy vibe if you aren't used to the area.
