Deep Ellum is one of the most eclectic, historic, and famous parts of Dallas. It's rich with music and art history. Everywhere you turn you see murals: random murals, Dallas' iconic skyline murals, Dallas landmark murals, a whole alley way of murals dedicated to blues musicians, etc. I mean how cool is it that the Deep Ellum Arts Co commissioned artists to paint 42 murals around the area? And that's not all that's there - there is so much more! So much so, that I had to break the Deep Ellum blog post into 4️⃣ different posts! Yes, 4️⃣, so here is blog post 3️⃣! The murals in Deep Ellum hold a special place in my heart - my husband and I got our engagement pictures done in here! They even have several small businesses (and a few bigger ones), restaurants, dessert shops, 7 music venues, plus a bowling alley AND a place where you can do a little batting practice for baseball that has a bar inside. Anything you could want Deep Ellum has it: history ✅ art ✅ music ✅ food ✅ shopping ✅. You won't be bored when you ✅ this place out!
The Art
The murals here are EVERYTHING and are literally everywhere you turn! Each time I have gone down to Deep Ellum I spent 2+ hours taking pictures and get 3+ miles of walking in. It can be over stimulating but hey, I got you! Fair warning, for most of these murals you gotta get there early or go during a week day or you'll get a ton of murals with cars parked in front.
Like I said before - there is art literally everywhere you look and turn. So I'll tackle all the murals by taking it street by street starting from N Good Latimer Expy. The third set of Murals are located on Main St. Again, I'll start at Good Latimer Expy and move down Main Street.
Deep Ellum Neon Sign Part 1
One of the most iconic signs of Dallas and the first of two in Deep Ellum located on Main St and Good Latimer Expy. Who doesn't love a good neon sign? Maybe just me? I like neon signs so much I dragged my husband to the Neon Sign Museum in Vegas (well worth it btw).
Artist(s) Unknown.
Deep Ellum Plaque
This cool piece is located on a cement plaque in front of the neon sign at the intersection of Main St and Good Latimer Expy.
Artist(s): Jerod "DTox" Davies comes from a long line of artists. "His passionate approach at creating art is fueled by a deeply-rooted attraction for unconventional beauty. Heavily influenced by texture, his style is virtually impossible to categorize yet easy to describe, bold portraits, believable and surreal, direct yet ornate with a vibrant sarcasm." (website: thejerod instagram: @dtoxart)
Beachscape Mural
I almost missed this one since it is in an enclosed area heading to a building entrance. This beachscape inspired piece can be found heading down Main St just after Punch Bowl Social and as you walk towards Uncommon James. It is facing N Good Latimer Expy.
Artist(s) Unknown.
Salsera Mural
Located on the back of Cafe Salsera facing a tiny parking lot and Main St is this awesome story telling mural! It can be found at the intersection of N Good Latimer Expy and Main St.
Artist(s): Legend D'Oro don't know anything about this artist - if you know let me know! (instagram: @legenddoro)
Gorilla Mural
These guys look like they just stepped out of a post apocalyptic world! Not sure what happen to these guys, maybe the beer is too delightful it made them euphoric? These guys are kicking back with some drinks because this piece was commissioned by the previous tenants of the building - a bar. This mural is facing Main St across the street from Uncommon James and Free People.
Artist(s): Falk Houbren is based in Colorado originally from Koblenz, Germany. His animals look like they should be in a comic book! All of his pieces have this psychedelic and post apocalyptic style. (instagram: @falk_art)
Legends Mural
Leon Bridges front and center showing off the Mavericks City Edition Jerseys from the 2022-2023 season. Who better to create the Mavs City Edition Jerseys than DFW native, Leon? This mural is on the side of Patagonia and faces one of main parking lots for Deep Ellum that can be accessed via Commerce St or Main St. This mural is across the same parking lot as the following murals: Not All Hero Wear Capes, Full of Tacos, and El Raton Murals.
Artist(s): Jeremy Biggers who is the master mind behind this mural he is a jack of all trades when it comes to fine arts. He is an artist, filmmaker, designer, and photographer based in Dallas. Unknown Mural
Unfortunately this parking lot sign takes up the majority of this mural. Hard to tell exactly what it is... so so so wish that sign wasn't there!
Artist(s) Unknown, there is a tag but couldn't find any social media.
Smiley Mural
From what I can tell this used to be a garage door for supplies and shipment that had a lion painted on it surrounded by the roses... well clearly the garage is not there anymore. But hey, at least there is some art on it - this cute little smiley.
Artist(s) for the roses: Leighton Autrey was once a MLB prospect but now does art and murals full time. He was one of the original artists to work on the 42 Murals Project in Deep Ellum. He has an impressive resume; including being one of four American artists to have his artwork showcased in the weeks leading up to the 2012 Olympics in London. Upstairs Circus 🔹 ♦️🔸 Mural
This fun and colorful 🔹 ♦️🔸 mural is located on the exterior walls of the Upstairs Circus - this place is really cool, its like if DIY & a bar had a baby. You can make custom jewelry, wall art, home decor, lifestyle items like: keychains, wallets, etc. all while you order drinks and snacks from the bar. I went to their location in Austin about 6 years ago (hence the purple hair - its been a while!) for a bachelorette party and had a BLAST! Looks like they have expanded their craft menu quite a bit since I was there, I guess I need go back!!
Artist(s) Unknown but here is Upstairs Circus' info: website: Upstairs Circus DFW instagram: @upstairscircus.
Musicians Mural
Facing an entrance for a walk thru area that takes you to Elm St are these two musicians. This entrance is located on Main St directly across Main St from 2nd Street (a second hand store). Some days the doors are shut some days they're open. The musician on the right you can see clearly from Main St. The other musician does not face Main St but you can see him as you head to the doors to the walk thru area.
Artist(s): Joe Iurato is a New Jersey based artist and has amazing portrait murals scattered throughout the US. His resume includes impressive collabs with Nike, the NFL, Red Bull, ESPN to name a few. (website: Joe Iurato Art instagram: @joeiurato)
Upside Down Garden Mural
This awesome Upside Down Garden is the first mural you'll find in the walk thru area that takes you to Elm St from Main St! One of my favorite murals but not surprising since I love this artist! Her pieces usually have an interactive element to it. This mural appears to have the 🌸 and 🌼 hanging on the left for you to "smell" and pose for a picture. Make sure to use #whatliftsyou if you post it on social media.
Artist(s): Kelsey Montague splits her time between Denver and Nashville. Her murals are scattered around the US and each one is easy to spot since they all have this whimsical charm to them. She most recently started transforming Airbnb rentals to make them an interactive stay for your vacation. Dallas is lucky enough to have two of her pieces - one here in Deep Ellum and the other in Plano at the Shops at Legacy. (instagram: @kelseymontagueart)
Musician # 2 Mural
The final musician in the walk thru area is on the stair way leading to the upper half of the walk thru. He's playing his harmonica facing the Upside Down Garden Mural underneath the walk way to take you to Elm St.
Artist(s): Joe Iurato (website: Joe Iurato Art instagram: @joeiurato)

Rise and Charge Mural
Rise and charge indeed! This piece is on the side of the sporting goods store, Warstic. Warstic is a cool little place that also has a bar and a batting cage. Oh, and it's owned by Jack Black of The White Stripes, Ian Kinsler of the Texas Rangers/Detriot Tigers, and Ben Jenkins. There's a deeper meaning behind this mural and the one below. The hawk symbolizes the whole meaning behind their products - they want their products to attack the ball/life like a warrior hunting for it's prey. This mural faces N Malcolm X Blvd and is across the street from the Beautiful New World mural above.
Artist(s): Not entirely sure but the artist who did all the writing on the building is Leighton Autry... so may he did the hawk too? (website: Leighton Autry instagram: @leightonautry)
Time to Hunt Mural
The hawk is officially off to hunt for the pray. This piece is facing the Main St side of Warstic and facing one of the main parking lots for Deep Ellum.

Once again, I am a sucker for contrasting colors! This piece is based off the Poem, America by Allen Ginsberg. Hence the two books the person is balancing on the telephone pole with: one labelled Ginsberg and the other labelled, Howl. Howl is the main poem Ginsberg wrote after having a vision. Love the way this mural depicts floating figures coming from the person's mind/head. Located in between two buildings on Main St across Main St from Terry Black's BBQ.

When & Where?
Deep Ellum has always had a rougher vibe but has been trying to make a come back for several years now. The come back is going fairly strong especially now that COVID has taken a back seat. The area, especially on the weekends is packed and hard to find parking. If you go there early during the day or on Sunday mornings its fairly easy to find parking and walk around. If you decide to go early or stay late bring a buddy; this is still downtown Dallas and can give off a sketchy vibe if you aren't used to the area.
